Vehicle controls
The vehicle controls section has 12 questions. You need 9 correct (75%). This is the highest pass mark — focus on getting it right.
Foot controls
Accelerator (right): Controls engine power and speed. Steady, smooth pressure for smooth acceleration.
Brake pedal (centre): Applies brakes to all four wheels. Press firmly but smoothly — never jerk.
Clutch (left, manual): Disengages engine from gearbox. Depress fully when changing gear or stopping.
Hand controls
Steering wheel: Hold at 9 and 3 o'clock (or 10 and 2). Push-pull technique — never cross arms.
Gear lever: Move smoothly between gears. Don't rest your hand on it while driving.
Handbrake: Apply when stationary. Press the button before releasing to avoid noise and wear.
Dashboard instruments
Fuel gauge
Shows remaining fuel. Red zone = under reserve. Refuel before hitting red.
Temperature gauge
Engine coolant temperature. If it goes into the red — stop immediately, do not drive.
Battery / charge light
Red battery icon = charging system fault. Have it checked immediately.
Oil pressure warning
Red oil can = critical — stop the engine immediately. Driving without oil destroys the engine.
Lights indicator
Shows which lights are on — dipped, full beam, rear fog, etc.
Speedometer
Vehicle speed in km/h. Always monitor to stay within the speed limit.
Odometer & trip meter
Total kilometres driven. Trip meter resets to track a single journey.
Pre-trip inspection
You'll be asked about pre-trip checks in the test. The POWER checklist covers the key points:
P — Petrol/fuel level checked
O — Oil level checked (dipstick)
W — Water/coolant level checked
E — Electrics — lights, indicators, wipers tested
R — Rubber — tyre condition and pressure checked
Test tip
Vehicle controls has the highest pass threshold (75%) but the fewest questions. Master the POWER pre-trip checklist, dashboard warning lights, and foot control descriptions — these repeat across most K53 test papers.
